Medical Marijuana in Mississippi to Soon Become Legal

Mississippi, It's Time

Mississippi, it’s time. You’ve been waiting for medical marijuana to become obtainable for residents in our state – and soon, it will be. The legwork to offer cannabis as a safe and effective treatment option for the citizens of Mississippi with debilitating medical conditions has been underway for years. These efforts are finally coming to fruition after the successful passage of Senate Bill 2095 (SB2095) during the 2022 Mississippi legislative session. Below, we’ve presented information to help you determine if you qualify for a medical marijuana card, how you can get a medical marijuana card, and a bit more information about what River Remedy offers patients, including our on-site dispensary in Byram.

Obtaining medical marijuana in Mississippi is a multi-step process with requirements for both patients seeking treatment (or for a caregiver on behalf of a patient who could benefit from treatment) and for Mississippi practitioners who want to offer the treatment to their patients. The Mississippi medical cannabis program is managed by the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH). The process for participating in the program has been outlined for patients and providers on their website.

Patients with medical conditions that deem them eligible as qualifying patients for medical marijuana according to SB2095 that are interested in receiving registry identification cards can visit a practitioner/provider who is participating in the medical cannabis program. If a patient has an appropriate diagnosis, the practitioner (DO, MD, NP, OD, PA) who is registered with MSDH as part of the medical cannabis program will complete the certification for the patient to participate in the program. The patient/caregiver then has 60 days to submit an application with Mississippi State Department of Health to participate in the program and if approved, will receive an electronic registry identification card. These cards are certified by the practitioner/provider for a maximum time period of no more than one year.
